A little bit about me….
I have a degree in musical theatre from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and have worked in the industry for 10 years now having performed in Musicals, Concerts, Private events, Bands and I currently play Nick Massi in the UK Tour of Bye Bye Baby.
In the last 8 years I have taught singing to all ages from 6 to 70 and truly believe singing is for everyone. Singing is a skill like anything else with regular practice you will get better it’s just taking that first step.
The basis of my technical teaching is from Estill Voice Craft which I have completed a level one and two course (learn more about Estill here https://www.estillvoice.com). Although the basis of my teaching is from Estill I have educated and continue to educate myself myself in Voice Science (The work of Ken Bozeman & Ingo Titze to name a few) as well as teaching methods and techniques (CVT Catherine Sadoline, SLS, Accent Method and Alexander technique the list goes on..)
Using my knowledge and experience my mission is to make you the best singer you can be!
Lessons are tailored to the individual:
NEW STUDENTS (Adults & late teens)
I will do an initial talk with you about your goals & what you may be having difficulty with. From here I’ll take you through a few exercises to see how your voice responds and based on this develop an action plan to get you on track. I’ll hear you sing through a song that you feel comfortable with and tweak it to sound its best. Then we’ll work on defining the style as well as exploring the performance. You’ll go away with a clear idea of what to work on and how to work on it. After the lesson I’ll give you suggestions on material that will develop you technically and artistically.
“Curtis has a brilliant understanding of how a persons voice works and what affects it. As someone who benefits from understanding how a machine works in regards to it’s outcome, this teaching style works very well. Furthermore, Curtis is very receptive to my goals as a student and a singer. At our first lesson he asked me what I wanted to improve upon and what i wanted to get out of lessons. I said I wanted to improve my range and get some audition ready songs and after 2 years my range has gone from G4 to C5 and I have several songs that I could perform at an audition today” Art O Hara
I teach as young as 6 years old and am fully dbs checked (happy to send this on request). I look at there musical interests, what artists they like and try and start off with a song they know. I will l often sing along with them to make them feel comfortable. My experience has shown me that young students respond best to singing games that teach them how to explore there voice without confusing them with terminology. We’ll be working on exploring range of pitch, rhythm, understanding music and seeing the fun and different sounds we can make whilst also working on performance.
If the the student wants to we’ll do singing exams which are progressive, build confidence and are goal based. They’ll also receive a certificate for there success.
Pre Theatre School students
I have many students who have been accepted into theatre schools such as Guildford, Urdang and Mountview. I have first hand experience of this process as well as understanding what theatre schools will be looking for in terms of attitude and ability. I’ll do an initial assessment of your voice and how it works including your strengths and weaknesses. Based on this assessment I will help you in choosing material right for your voice and that will show you off to your best. We’ll work on the performance as well as any technical difficulties.
“Curtis is an excellent singing teacher, who is always striving to improve his teaching and his pupils learning. I have had many lessons with Curtis and in each one he is precise, determined and inspiring. He constantly made me feel comfortable and I truly believe Curtis’s guidance and excellent teaching skills got me into GSA.” Max Newitt
Sometimes you just need to fine tune a song to make it spotless for that all important audition. This can be a one off lesson or a few sessions to make your piece spotless.
“I have always enjoyed my singing lessons with Curtis. He is a great teacher and without being at all pushy he gets the most out of you and always brings out your strengths. Highly recommend him” Freddie Allen
